An up-to-date GeoIP database without manual uploads
PrestaShop can use IP-based geolocation to identify a visitor’s likely country and apply country-specific access or ordering restrictions. This requires a MaxMind GeoIP database, but the database file is not updated automatically.
A manual update requires you to sign in to your MaxMind account, download and extract the latest database, then upload it to the correct directory on your server. Webstart GeoData Updater automates this process.
The module checks whether a new release is available, downloads and validates it when required, then replaces the existing database in a single operation.
Why automate GeoIP updates?

- 📅 Helps you follow MaxMind’s licence terms: the GeoLite licence requires old databases to be removed from use within 30 days of a new release.

What does the module do?
- 🔗 Downloads directly from MaxMind: it uses your own MaxMind account ID and licence key with the official download endpoint.
- 🗺️ Supports multiple GeoLite2 databases: GeoLite2 City is selected by default, while Country and ASN databases can also be enabled.
- 🔍 Checks before downloading: the module first checks whether a newer release is available and downloads the database only when it has changed.
- 🛡️ Performs multi-stage validation: it verifies the SHA-256 checksum, opens the downloaded database and performs a test lookup using PrestaShop’s GeoIP library.
- ⚡ Uses atomic file replacement: the new database replaces the live file only after successful validation. If the download or validation fails, the existing database remains unchanged.
- ⏱️ Provides two scheduling methods: updates can be started through a token-protected cron URL or a command-line PHP script.
- 📊 Includes a back-office status panel: it displays the database file size, last modification time, result of the latest run and detailed logs.
- ▶️ Allows manual updates: the “Update now” button can be used to check for and install a new release at any time.
- ✉️ Optional error notifications: the module can send an English or Hungarian email when an update fails.
- 🔒 Prevents parallel execution: a locking mechanism stops multiple update processes from running simultaneously.

Important information
IP-based geolocation is an estimate. It cannot determine a visitor’s exact address, and the result may be affected by VPNs, proxy servers or mobile networks. The module automates database updates but does not alter the accuracy of the data supplied by MaxMind.
The module does not change your PrestaShop geolocation rules. It provides an automatically maintainable database for the country restrictions already configured in your store.
Requirements
- a free MaxMind GeoLite2 account and licence key;
- outbound HTTPS access to MaxMind’s servers;
- the PHP cURL extension or an enabled
allow_url_fopensetting; - write permission for the
app/Resources/geoip/directory; - a configurable cron task for fully automatic operation.

Installation in approximately 5 minutes
- Upload and install the module through the PrestaShop back office.
- Enter your MaxMind account ID and licence key.
- Use the “Update now” button to test the connection and perform the first update.
- Configure the cron URL provided by the module to run once per day.
Updates, licence and support
Each licence is valid for one online store and includes one year of updates and support. Module updates are installed by Webstart Updater from digitally signed packages.
The module does not transmit customer data. For licence validation, it sends only the module version and the store domain to the licence server.
